
Cutting Carbon in Semi Fab: Why Vacuum IR Actually Works
Let’s be honest: traditional resistive furnaces are energy hogs. They spend a massive amount of power heating up the entire chamber—walls and all—just to get the wafer to the right temperature. It’s like heating your whole house just to warm up a single cup of coffee. It’s wasteful, and with “green factory” rules tightening up, it’s becoming a real headache. That’s where vacuum infrared (IR) comes in. Instead of heating the room, we just hit the wafer.
How the physics actually plays out
When you’re working in a vacuum, convection is off the table. You’re relying entirely on radiation. We tune these systems to hit the exact wavelengths that silicon or gallium nitride love to absorb. Because the energy goes straight into the substrate and doesn’t waste time warming up the chamber walls, your idle power draw plummets. And it’s fast. Really fast. Your ramp-up times drop, your cycle times shrink, and you end up using way fewer kWh per batch. It just makes sense.
The hardware side of things
We build these lamps with high-purity quartz and tungsten filaments. But since they live in a vacuum, we have to be obsessive about the seals. If you get outgassing, you get contamination. And nobody wants a ruined wafer. There is a trade-off, though. We’re packing a lot of power into a tiny footprint. That puts some serious pressure on your power supplies. If you’re running these at full tilt, you’ve got to make sure your cooling jackets are up to the task. Otherwise, you’re looking at warped lamp housings, which is a mess nobody wants to deal with.
The bottom line for your footprint
Moving to IR means you can stop relying on those giant heating elements that stay hot for hours after the job is done. Now, the system only draws heavy power when it’s actually heating. For a lot of setups, this is a simple swap for older thermal stages. You get more throughput and a smaller carbon bill. Just a heads-up: double-check that your vacuum pumps can handle the thermal load so you don’t fry your seals.
